Dear Readers :
As much as I’m sure it will shock some of you there is something I agree with Saint Obama about. It’s high time that our young people are required to provide their nation with some compulsory service. We are the only civilized country as far as I know that does not require this of it’s young people. This does NOT necessarily need to be military service. Something along the lines of Saint Obama’s plan would be advisable. Please not not make the mistake of thinking I am specifically endorsing Saint Obama’s plan. God knows his vision of a group of American Brownshirts
larger in number than our combined military forces and equally funded and answerable only to him scares the bejesus out of me. It’s the first step to Nazism. I do endorse the general idea of compulsory service though. In that regard I have a solution to the problem described in the article below.
While I do not begrudge Doctors and other allied health professionals making a good living since their education is so expensive and they are highly trained I also do not think health care should be viewed as solely a business.Call me old fashioned but I think there should still be some humanitarian concerns involved in choosing and practicing in that career path. 
I think if your role model for this career is Bill Gates or Warren Buffett rather than Albert Schweitzer you are in the wrong field.
I propose that ALL Doctors and allied health care practitioners in fields that have shortages as described in the article below should be required to give two years of quality service to the nation BEFORE they can be licensed to practice in civilian society. If they refuse service then they will not be eligible for any federal loans or federal jobs and will be required to give service elsewhere. I really don’t care if they shovel pig shit
in the Mississippi Delta for two years .They WILL serve under my system. 
Also if they choose not to give medical service but some other service then they will not be eligible for federal loans or jobs until twenty years after their alternate service is completed. It’s time to stop babying these ” professional ” career types and start treating them like all other members of society. WASHINGTON — Obama administration officials, alarmed at doctor shortages, are looking for ways to increase the supply of physicians to meet the needs of an aging population and millions of uninsured people who would gain coverage under legislation championed by the president.

One proposal — to increase Medicare payments to general practitioners, at the expense of high-paid specialists — has touched off a lobbying fight.
Family doctors and internists are pressing Congress for an increase in their Medicare payments. But medical specialists are lobbying against any change that would cut their reimbursements. Congress, the specialists say, should find additional money to pay for primary care and should not redistribute dollars among doctors — a difficult argument at a time of huge budget deficits.
Some of the proposed solutions, while advancing one of President Obama’s goals, could frustrate others. Increasing the supply of doctors, for example, would increase access to care but could make it more difficult to rein in costs.
The need for more doctors comes up at almost every Congressional hearing and White House forum on health care. “We’re not producing enough primary care physicians,” Mr. Obama said at one forum. “The costs of medical education are so high that people feel that they’ve got to specialize.” New doctors typically owe more than $140,000 in loans when they graduate.
Lawmakers from both parties say the shortage of health care professionals is already having serious consequences. “We don’t have enough doctors in primary care or in any specialty,” said Representative Shelley Berkley, Democrat of Nevada.
Senator Orrin G. Hatch, Republican of Utah, said, “The work force shortage is reaching crisis proportions.”
Even people with insurance have problems finding doctors.
Miriam Harmatz, a lawyer in Miami, said: “My longtime primary care doctor left the practice of medicine five years ago because she could not make ends meet. The same thing happened a year later. Since then, many of the doctors I tried to see would not take my insurance because the payments were so low.”
To cope with the growing shortage, federal officials are considering several proposals. One would increase enrollment in medical schools and residency training programs. Another would encourage greater use of nurse practitioners and physician assistants. A third would expand the National Health Service Corps, which deploys doctors and nurses in rural areas and poor neighborhoods.
Senator Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat and chairman of the Finance Committee, said Medicare payments were skewed against primary care doctors — the very ones needed to coordinate the care of older people with chronic conditions like congestive heart failure, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.
“Primary care physicians are grossly underpaid compared with many specialists,” said Mr. Baucus, who vowed to increase primary care payments as part of legislation to overhaul the health care system.
The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, an independent federal panel, has recommended an increase of up to 10 percent in the payment for many primary care services, including office visits. To offset the cost, it said, Congress should reduce payments for other services, an idea that riles many specialists.
Dr. Peter J. Mandell, a spokesman for the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, said: “We have no problem with financial incentives for primary care. We do have a problem with doing it in a budget-neutral way.
“If there’s less money for hip and knee replacements, fewer of them will be done for people who need them.”
The Association of American Medical Colleges is advocating a 30 percent increase in medical school enrollment, which would produce 5,000 additional doctors each year.
“If we expand coverage, we need to make sure we have physicians to take care of a population that is growing and becoming older,” said Dr. Atul Grover, the chief lobbyist for the association. “Let’s say we insure everyone. What next? We won’t be able to take care of all those people overnight.”
The experience of Massachusetts is instructive. Under a far-reaching 2006 law, the state succeeded in reducing the number of uninsured. But many who gained coverage have been struggling to find primary care doctors, and the average waiting time for routine office visits has increased.
“Some of the newly insured patients still rely on hospital emergency rooms for nonemergency care,” said Erica L. Drazen, a health policy analyst at Computer Sciences Corporation.
The ratio of primary care doctors to population is higher in Massachusetts than in other states.
Increasing the supply of doctors could have major implications for health costs.
“It’s completely reasonable to say that adding more physicians to the work force is likely to increase health spending,” Dr. Grover said.
But he said: “We have to increase spending to save money. If you give people better access to preventive and routine care for chronic illnesses, some acute treatments will be less necessary.”
In many parts of the country, specialists are also in short supply.
Linde A. Schuster, 55, of Raton, N.M., said she, her daughter and her mother had all had medical problems that required them to visit doctors in Albuquerque.
“It’s a long, exhausting drive, three hours down and three hours back,” Ms. Schuster said.
The situation is even worse in some rural areas. Dr. Richard F. Paris, a family doctor in Hailey, Idaho, said neighboring Custer County had no doctors, even though it is larger than the state of Rhode Island. So he flies in three times a month, over the Sawtooth Mountains, to see patients.
The Obama administration is pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into community health centers.
But Mary K. Wakefield, the new administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration, said many clinics were having difficulty finding doctors and nurses to fill vacancies.Doctors trained in internal medicine have historically been seen as a major source of frontline primary care. But many of them are now going into subspecialties of internal medicine, like cardiology and oncology.
I think it would be good for medical professionals to experience THIS sort of life BEFORE they can practice their chosen fields in civilian society. I think it would keep them humble. That God Complex thing a lot of them have is a major pain in the ass

Do any of you find it strange that Pope Benedict goes to the Middle East on a mission of peace to speak to our Moslem and Jewish brothers and is vilified by,both Moslem and Jewish religious leaders ? Who does the Pope think he is Anne Coulter? What an amazing albeit unintended effect this man of peace has on other religious “men of peace”.It amazes me that both the Jewish leaders and Moslem leaders so clearly chose to miss the point of the Pope’s message and trip entirely. Could it be that they are too busy focusing on extracting their respective pounds of flesh?
I’m astounded that the leaders of both groups want a PERSONAL apology and an apology as a representative of The Holy See from the Pope for their perceived grievances. The Jewish leaders want an apology from the Pope as a representative of The Church for the Church’s alleged complicity in Nazi atrocities.To the best of my knowledge no Church complicity in Nazi atrocities has ever been proven. There is however much evidence to prove that The Church was instrumental in confronting the Nazis and in protecting individual Jews.They also want a PERSONAL apology from the Pope for his service in the Nazi military during WW 2. The fact that he was conscripted into these services against his will and deserted at his first opportunity seems to matter little to these apology seekers. How come Senator Robert Byrd who was a member of the Ku Klux Klan in his youth can be credited with ” having a change of heart” and now be viewed as a man of peace and racial harmony but The Pope will always be viewed as a Nazi? Why is it that Saint Obama who has a very well documented history of association with murdering domestic terrorists is viewed as a Man of Hope and Change. The Messiah of The Deranged Masses if you will but the Pope will always be viewed as a Nazi?
I’m a Christian though not a Catholic and even I can see why the Catholics get real tired of this little game.I will think about conveying my personal apology to the Jewish people when I just once here one of the Jewish religious leaders mention all the other non Jewish people that were killed in the Shoah. When the Pope spoke recently at Yad Vashem all I read about was how upset the Jewish religious leaders and people were that the Pope didn’t address their suffering via the atrocities committed against them more forcefully. Not a word was uttered about the handicapped , the Gypsies , the Communists , the undesirables ,the Catholics , the trade unionists etc etc etc. What Jewish leader speaks for them?As far as I know no Jewish leader speaks for them. I’ve never heard a word spoken from any Jewish leader in remembrance and honor of them.That is the Pope’s job. He does it admirably in my opinion. I will think about conveying my personal apology to the Jewish people when I hear a Jewish religious leader condem forcefully the Jewish doctors that abort Catholic and Protestant babies. Who speaks of this holocaust? Where is the Yad Vashem Of The Unborn? I will think about conveying my personal apology to the Jewish people when I hear some Jewish religious and political leaders admit and apologize for the atrocities committed by their nation and people. Yes Yes I know it’s very unfashionable to call Israel / The Jewish people to task for any of their mistakes. It is also very naive to think that Israel / The Jewish people alone have no blood on their hands. Indeed that view is naive and dangerous. Israel / The Jewish people are part of humanity and all of humanity has blood on it’s hands.Israel / The Jewish people are no exception. They have been both victim and perpetrator as has every nation and people. It is The Human Condition. I don’t see it changing any time soon. Would that The Second Coming would happen tomorrow and put a stop to all of this. Unfortunately I think that is a bit in the future yet.
The Moslems are upset with His Holiness for a perceived lack of comittment in fighting Moslem / Islamic defamation.They also seem to be still harboring a grudge regarding The Crusades. I’m pleased that His Holiness has not proffered the desired apology since none is required in my opinion.
I will think about offering my personal apology to the Islamic people when I hear their leaders forcefully repudiate terrorism. When women are no longer stoned to death for adultery. When girls are allowed to go to school. When Buddhist archaeological treasures in their countries are no longer destroyed.When they stop trying to force Sharia Law on the rest of us. Yes folks the list of conditions that the Islamic people will need to meet before I even think of offering my personal apology to them is a long and distinguished one. I think we all can be pretty confident about exactly when those conditions will be met.

I’m really curious about this phenomenon of people needing an apology from someone that has not aggrieved them. About ten years ago I was in Hawaii and had the pleasure of meeting some young Japanese people. They were in their twenties and were thoroughly charming. One night right out of the clear blue this 25’ish Japanese woman apologized to me personally for W.W.2. I was flabbergasted to say the least considering her age and the fact that she couldn’t possibly have done anything to me or my family. I don’t know exactly where this need for apologies or to give apologies when none are required originated from although I suspect as with the vast majority of stupid ideas it emanates from Dumbass / Liberon political philosophy. P.C. gone wild if you will. I find it very disturbing. There is no reason to make people feel guilty for sins they did not commit. The son is not required to pay for the sins of the Father.
If you are a British citizen that did not directly do anything to my Irish relatives do NOT apologize to me . None is necessary or sought.
If you are of European ancestry and did not do anything directly to my Native American relatives do NOT apologize to me. None is necessary or sought.

Earlier this month a 90 year old American citizen was forcibly removed from his home and flown to Munich , Germany to stand trial for alleged Nazi war crimes. John Demjanjuk was an S.S. Guard at the notorious Sobibor Concentration Camp who it is alleged was complicit in the murder of 29,000 European Jews in the Nazi ovens. While it should be of great concern to all Americans that a grave injustice has probably been done to this American the focus of this essay is not Mr. Demjanjuk’s guilt or innocence. It is something far more important than that.
I have absolutely no doubt that Mr. Demjanjuk will be water boarded as well as tortured via some of the other methods employed with the approval of our current Speaker Of The House Of Representatives Nancy Pelosi amongst many of the current Democratic members of Congress who are conveniently now in quite a tizzy about these ” torture” methods being employed against vicious known terrorists at Guantanamo. How is it that these interrogation methods are inhumane for terrorists but the treatment Mr. Demjanjuk has already received with far less compelling evidence against him does not spark even one voice of outrage amongst the enlightened and oh so morally superior Liberons / Dumbasses / Democrats? In thirty years when the shoe may very well be on the other foot do any of you think Ms. Pelosi and her ilk will relish the idea of being judged by the mullahs of Iran or Saudi Arabia or worse even still a now dominant Al Qaeda? I think we all know that a beheading would be in their immediate futures. How is it that ” the attention grab ” method of interrogation which leaves no permanent damage and at best is nothing more than a major pain in the ass for the recipient is considered ” torture ” by these folks but forcibly removing a 90 year old man from his home of 50 years to stand trial in a foreign country for a crime the evidence of which leaves a reasonable doubt is not considered torture? These people are shameless. They should be held accountable by the same standards they hold everybody else accountable. Perhaps someday the Mullahs will get to do all of us Americans a favor.
With God’s judgment so close at hand for Mr. Demjanjuk is it really necessary for humanity to be screaming for the blood of a 90 year old man?
This is nothing more than yet another example of the perceived aggrieved seeking their pound of flesh.

I have a question for you all to ponder today. First however I will provide a little background information. In the last ten years or so we have seen the beheading of Daniel Pearl for being an ” infidel ” , 3,000 innocents killed in The World Trade Center attack , The Bali Bombings , the rise and subsequent brutal regime of the Taliban in Afghanistan , The Barcelona and London subway attacks , The Copenhagen riots over a cartoon caricature of Muhammed , the Fatwa issued against Salman Rushdie , the acceptance of Sharia Law in Britian , The Mumbai attacks , The U.S Embassy in Nairobi attacks , The U.S.S. Cole attack , constant and repeated suicide attacks against Israel , the destruction of priceless Buddhist artifacts in Afghanistan , repeated racist riots in Greece and France and the drumbeat continues ever incessantly.
All of these heinous acts were perpetrated by the radical militant Jihadist Islamics in the name of advancing their religion , culture and civilization to a dominant position in the world. All of these actions coupled with their fanaticism and willingness to die and take as many Christians , Jews , Hindus , Buddhists and other ” infidels ” with them begs a rather obvious question. Who has Queen Isabella’s jewels? It is time for the Moslems , ALL Moslems . to leave Christian , Jewish , Hindu , Buddhist and all other ” infidel ” lands.
Why is it that we can spend trillions of American dollars , spill an untold amount of American blood liberating Muslim lands only to have them spit in our face yet it’s too expensive to simply round them all up give them a parachute fly them over Egypt or Saudia Arabia and invite them to jump. As far as I’m concerned not one more dollar should be spent on liberating their lands and certainly not one more drop of American blood should be spilled trying to bring them into the 21st Century. It’s time for them to go.
I repeat who has Queen Isabella’s jewels? Which Western leader will have the stones to stand up to these barbarians and throw them out of his / her country.I’m betting it will be a woman leader again. Maybe Angela Merkel. She stood up to George Bush and the Chinese. She appears to be a very strong leader. Here’s hoping she or somebody will act soon.

Dozens of cars have been smashed, 14 people injured and 46 arrested in riots by Muslim migrants over the alleged defacing of a Koran by a policeman.
Police fired tear gas and stun grenades at hundreds of protesters outside Parliament in the city centre.
Police said they would investigate the allegation that an officer tore up an Iraqi migrant’s Koran while checking his identity papers in Athens last week. “But this isolated incident cannot justify these acts of violence,” said Interior Minister Christos Markoyiannakis.
Waves of illegal immigration in recent years have led to an influx of Muslims, mostly from Pakistan and Afghanistan, living in run-down parts of central Athens. Greek rights activist Thanassis Kourkoulas said the protest showed the migrants “have a voice”

Another wimpish demand for a Western “apology” for long-past historic events, abetted as usual by le trahison des clercs – the insatiable appetite of modern soi-disants intellectuals to disparage their own civilisation and grovel to others. This time, Spanish writers are demanding that their government should apologise to Moors for King Philip III’s expulsion of the Moriscos (Islamic “converts” resident in Spain) from the kingdom in 1609. The claim is they were so badly treated in the process that “hundreds” died.
In case the virulently anti-Hispanic prime minister who afflicts Spain at present – José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, recently dismissed by Nicolas Sarkozy as “dim” – should be tempted to indulge in any such masochistic exercise, how about taking it chronologically? Let’s start with the massive Islamic invasion of Spain by Arabs, Syrians and Berbers in 711, which conquered the entire country by exemplary brutality within five years. Would Morocco like to start the ball rolling by apologising to Spain for that?
Then there was the little incident at the Battle of Tours on October 10, 732 when Abdul Rahman Al Ghafiqi, governor-general of al-Andalus, the Muslim kingdom of Spain, was finally stopped in his tracks by Charles Martel, 12 miles north of Poitiers – not what you would call a traditionally Islamic area. The signs are these chaps were not going to stop even at the Watford Gap, unless somebody took drastic action. How about an apology to France for that incursion?
It took the Christians of Spain 800 years to recover their country in the bloody and relentless campaign known as the Reconquista, completed only with the fall of Granada in 1492. During those centuries, along with such atrocities as salting dissidents’ decapitated heads as trophies for the Caliph, the Mediterranean populations were dragged in their hundreds of thousands to the slave markets of North Africa. Any apologies on offer?
Today, Osama bin Laden is urging Muslims from North Africa to migrate to Spain in the largest possible numbers to re-establish the Islamic state of al-Andalus. This campaign is boosted by tales of Moroccans who still hold the keys to houses in Granada, as well as by the fatuity of Spanish and other Western “intellectuals” afflicted with a masochistic, “my country/religion/civilisation always wrong” mentality. Historical apologies were an absurdity made fashionable in the 1990s; it is time to forget about such nonsense.

WASHINGTON – Barack Obama has promised the mother of Matthew Shepard fast action in the U.S. Senate to approve a “hate crimes” bill that critics say would establish the first special legal protections for pedophiles and those with an array of other sexual proclivities.
Judy Shepard, the mother of a murdered homosexual, visited the White House to lobby for H.R. 1913, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, now residing in the Senate after approval in the House.
The White House issued an official comment on the meeting: “The President thanked Ms. Shepard for her work on the hate crimes bill and reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the Senate finalize the bill and act swiftly.”
Critics call the bill “The Pedophile Protection Act” and it is the target of an organized letter-writing campaign that has already generated more than 560,000 individual letters sent by Fed Ex to all 100 U.S. senators.

The campaign, organized by WND columnist Janet Porter, who also heads the Faith2Action Christian ministry, permits activists to send individually addressed letters to all 100 senators over their own “signature” for only $10.95. Nearly 6,000 people have participated in the campaign.
Sources working with senators opposing the legislation say the campaign has shaken up the dynamics of the debate.
“This bill was supposed to sail through the Senate, but it suddenly has become much more controversial as a result of all these letters,” one source said. “Still, not a single Republican senator has yet stood up in open, public opposition to the bill.”
Last week, a Texas pastor wrote an open letter to the U.S. Senate, asking someone, anyone, to filibuster the pending “hate crimes” legislation and stop what he calls a “maddening march to the destruction of our First Amendment right to freely practice our religion.”
As WND has reported, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009 would provide special protections to homosexual people but leave Christian ministers open to prosecution should their teachings be linked to any subsequent offense, by anyone, against a homosexual person.
WND first reported on what has become widely known as “The Pedophile Protection Act” last month, raising nationwide alarm that has already generated hundreds of thousands of individual letters of protest to members of the U.S. Senate.

Rep. Louis Gohmert, R-Texas, and Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said the only chance to defeat the legislation was for a massive outpouring of opposition from the American people.
“If you guys don’t raise enough stink there’s no chance of stopping it,” Gohmert said on a radio program with Porter. “It’s entirely in the hands of your listeners and people across the country. If you guys put up a strong enough fight, that will give backbone enough to the 41 or 42 in the Senate to say we don’t want to have our names on that.”
An analysis by Shawn D. Akers, policy analyst with Liberty Counsel said the proposal, formally known as H.R. 1913, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act bill in the House and S. 909 in the Senate, would create new federal penalties against those whose “victims” were chosen based on an “actual or perceived … sexual orientation, gender identity.”
Gohmert warned Porter during the interview that even her introduction of him, and references to the different sexual orientations, could be restricted if the plan becomes law.
“You can’t talk like that once this becomes law,” he said.
He said the foundational problem with the bill is that it is based on lies: It assumes there’s an epidemic of crimes in the United States – especially actions that cross state lines – that is targeting those alternative sexual lifestyles.
“When you base a law on lies, you’re going to have a bad law,” he said. “This ‘Pedophilia Protection Act,’ a ‘hate crimes’ bill, is based on the representation that there’s a epidemic of crimes based on bias and prejudice. It turns out there are fewer crimes now than there were 10 years ago.”
He said he fought in committee and in the House, where it was approved 249-175, to correct some of the failings, including his repeated requests for definitions in the bill for terms such as “sexual orientation.”
Majority Democrats refused, he said. He said that leaves the definition up to a standard definition in the medical field, which includes hundreds of “philias” and “isms” that would be protected.

I urge my colleagues to vote in favor of this rule…”
Obama, supported strongly during his campaign by homosexual advocates, appears ready to respond to their desires.
“I urge members on both sides of the aisle to act on this important civil rights issue by passing this legislation to protect all of our citizens from violent acts of intolerance,” he said.
But Gohmert pointed out that if an exhibitionist flashes a woman, and she responds by slapping him with her purse, he has probably committed a misdemeanor while she has committed a federal felony hate crime.

He said there’s already an effort afoot in the U.S. to list those pro-family organizations “alongside several neo-Nazi groups … to create guilt by the artificial manufactured appearance of association.”
During arguments in the House while the plan was being adopted, lawmakers pointed out the representatives were voting for protection for “all 547 forms of sexual deviancy or ‘paraphilias’ listed by the American Psychiatric Association.”
Porter cited the amendment offering from King in committee that was very simple: “The term sexual orientation as used in this act or any amendments to this act does not include pedophilia.”
But majority Democrats refused to accept it.
“Having reviewed cases as an appellate judge, I know that when the legislature has the chance to include a definition and refuses, then what we look at is the plain meaning of those words,” explained Gohmert. “The plain meaning of sexual orientation is anything to which someone is orientated. That could include exhibitionism, it could include necrophilia (sexual arousal/activity with a corpse) … it could include urophilia (sexual arousal associated with urine), voyeurism. You see someone spying on you changing clothes and you hit them, they’ve committed a misdemeanor, you’ve committed a federal felony under this bill. It is so wrong.”
Republicans in the House also attempted to amend the bill to offer hate crimes protection for U.S. military veterans who were attacked because of their service. Democrats unanimously rejected the amendment.

My first year in China I was working at a university near the Provincial Capital of a Central Chinese Province. This university was famous for having the most foreign teachers of any university in China. To the best of my knowledge that is still true. They were also famous for being the lowest paid university for foreigners in China. I did not know that at the time. I knew little of China of any substantive practical use.The vast majority of these teachers were Americans from all over the country.
Of the 95 teachers probably 80 were American. We also had teachers from Japan , S. Korea , Germany , England , Ireland , South Africa and France. It was a very interesting faculty.
Every year this university would have their Culture Day Festivities in Oct. The purpose of Culture Day was to expose these students most of whom were from the countryside and many of whom had never even seen a foreigner before to the various cultures of the countries of the faculty’s origins. There was going to be food , music , dance , art , fashion , movies and virtually all aspects of the various cultures concerned. Also as Americans since we were the vast majority we were to also present our individual state’s cultures. Although I was chronologically advanced I was by Chinese experience standards very young. I actually thought this would be great fun and was looking forward to it. I couldn’t understand why some of the more experienced teachers were dreading it. After about a month of preparation Culture Day had arrived.
My personal assignment was to be one of The Clanton Gang in a re-enactment of The Shootout At The O.K. Corral. This university had a section of the campus that was designed to look like a European , probably Southern Italian , city square. That is where the re-enactment took place. The first performance took place in the afternoon just as classes let out and the students were walking back to their dorms. None of the students knew what we were going to do. Picture twelve ” cowboys ” walking around a Chinese university campus made to look like an Italian town square. Needless to say these Chinese students were a bit confused. LoL The guns we were wearing in particular caught their attention. They didn’t know quite what to think. All of a sudden the guns started firing , the cowboys were screaming at each other people were ” dying ” in the street. All activity in that square came to a screeching halt. Abject looks of horror and terror and more than a bit of fright were etched on these students faces. After about five minutes when ” The Gunfight At The O.K. Corral ” was over all the ” dead ” cowboys rose and we all took a bow. It took a minute but the students finally realized what they had seen. We got a standing ovation.
That evening I went to see some of the other exhibits. I saw a demo of Western Swing Dancing by two very talented young people from the West of America. I saw a very nice photo exhibit of Tokyo architecture. I ate some Korean food. It was a very enjoyable evening. All the faculty had done a first rate job putting together a classy week for these kids.
The next morning in class I asked my students if they had seen ” The Shootout At The O.K. Corral “. Much to my amazement not a single one had. I asked if any of them had seen any of the other exhibits. Again to my amazement not a single one had bothered to see any exhibit. I was a bit pissed considering all the FREE time and effort we had put in to make this exciting for these kids but I figured since it was the first night of seven and maybe they were tired or had other plans I’d let it go. I went out that evening and saw more of the exhibits and had another wonderful time. I also kept an eye out for my students. Not a one anywhere I went.
I went in the next morning and asked them again if any of them had seen any of the exhibits. Again not a one. I was getting pissed. Why I asked? We are not interested they answered in unison. My tone changed dramatically as I instructed them why they needed to participate in Culture Day and how much fun they’d have. I also explained to them why it was rude on their part not to take advantage of this opportunity considering all the free time and effort their teachers had put in to make sure they had fun and learned something.. I told them I expected to start seeing them every night for the rest of the festival. Again that night I saw none of them. Again they just didn’t bother. I went to class the third day and informed them that it was now their homework assignment to go see one exhibit of their choosing every night for the rest of the festival and be prepared to speak about it in English in class. Begrudgingly about 10 % complied. The rest ignored me as usual. The rest failed the class miserably as they so richly deserved.
I was very pissed about their lack of courtesy and arrogance and let it be known to all concerned , them , the Administration , and my colleagues. One of the more senior of my colleagues took me aside one day and explained to me that the reason they wouldn’t participate was because they were afraid. I thought that assessment was bullshit then and I think so now.
Fast forward 4 years. I am now at a private school in the N.E. of China a whole lot smarter about China and Chinese culture. Being ever the optimist I figured I would at least give them the chance to be exposed to American culture. Again the same reaction. I had university level students ranging in age from 16 to 28 tell me with a straight face that they were not interested in going to horseback riding , boating , hiking , bowling or having a pic nic because they were afraid. Those things are dangerous was the general theme. Being older and wiser and having run into this phenomenon everywhere I had been in China I ignored my impulses to do anything of a fun or cultural nature with 95% of all my students from that point on.
Friends if you ever do decide to come to China and teach be prepared to hear the following from your students ” We want to learn about culture.” Do not fall for it. They do not want to learn about culture. The HaNazees in charge of the education system in China have taught them to say that. The reasoning is that it makes them look sophisticated and intelligent in front of the lao wai / foreigners. It never occurs to them that you must talk the talk and walk the walk. It doesn’t take the lao wai / foreigners long to figure out that they have no interest in walking the walk.
You will be told that the reason they don’t participate in cultural things is that they are afraid. Do not fall for this either. The real reason is based in arrogance , stubbornness and laziness. If it’s not Chinese culture they are not interested. If it requires a bit of work and participation on their part they are also not interested.
I find it very sad that in this day and age when China is opening up to the world the vast majority of Chinese students choose to beat themselves both culturally and academically before they even play the game. Sad indeed.
I can tell you based upon vast personal experience that Chinese university students are the most boring people on the face of the planet. Avoid socializing with them at all costs if you want to keep your sanity.

Dear Readers :
Today I’m going to discus ” The W.T.O. Comes To China “. In order for you to fully appreciate the humor in this story a little background information regarding the Chinese educational system is in order.
The focus of the Chinese educational system is rote learning. In order for Chinese students to be admitted into a university they must be able to pass the national standardized entrance exam. To pass this exam you must be able to answer a certain number of questions correctly. The correct answer is the ONLY thing that matters. Why it’s the correct answer or how something came to be the way it is are unimportant considerations. In short creative thought , deductive reasoning and critical / analytical thinking are discouraged. As a matter of fact they are punished. ” Thinking outside the box” will get you into some serious trouble. This raises seven kinds of Hell for lao wai / foreign teachers because we teach exactly the opposite way. It also sells the Chinese students very short in my opinion. Talk about the soft discrimination of lowered expectations!! If a lao wai / foreign teacher has 30 – 35 students in his class which is not unusual at my university or in my experience throughout China he will have 2-3 that will participate fully and maybe another 2-3 that will participate irregularly. The rest of them contribute NOTHING to the class. Couple this with the fact that unlike ANYWHERE else in the world Chinese students believe that when they come to university the hard work is over so it’s time to PLAY and that attitude on their part makes it very difficult for the lao wai / foreign teachers to teach them anything. Also for the first time in their lives they are away from their parents who rode them constantly all their lives to study. They have a taste of freedom FINALLY and they like it. Nobody has ever told them that freedom comes with responsibility UNTIL they meet their first principled foreign teacher. Conflict is the order of the day until they decide to accept that English is OUR language and Western culture is OUR culture and we know how to teach it.
The Chinese educational system does not provide an education at all. They provide indoctrination. It’s the way the system controls the people.
My third year in China I taught at a school in a small Chinese city in S.W. China. I didn’t know it at the time but this school was in the worst category of schools in China. These schools were where you went if you couldn’t get in anyplace else. Usually the reason these kids can’t get in anywhere else is because they are not bright enough so they just go learn a skill somewhere so that they can get a not too demanding job. Sometimes though they are bright but lazy . unmotivated , uncommitted and undisciplined. Those qualities are prevalent in Chinese students throughout China. I would estimate that 80% of them are like that. There were some late bloomers also though. I had four of them from this school. In this school there were 15 ,000 students . Of that 15,000 the government let only 15 continue their education. Of those 15 4 were my students. They were the ” late bloomers “.
It was final exam time. For their assignment they were to speak about any topic of their choosing for two minutes in English in class. I was really dreading having to listen to 45 of these ” speeches ” because by now I knew what to expect. I made them tell me their topic choice in advance and gave them two weeks to prepare. The topics were pretty much what I expected except for one young lady’s. Her topic was ” The W.T.O. Comes to China” . Well a ray of light in this Chinese educational abyss. I was excited to hear what she had to say.
The day of the final exam I chose to have her go last. At least I would have something to look forward to. None of the other students disappointed me. They gave me exactly what I expected. Zero effort and zero participation. Finally it was time for her speech. She stood up and with the confidence and expertise of the accomplished public speaker began her speech. She was discussing why sanitation was so bad in China and what could be done about it. What the hell does this have to do with the W.T.O. coming to China I was thinking? I was tempted to interrupt her speech and ask her. She was doing so well though that I decided to let her continue.
When she got to the part of her speech about how to solve the sanitation problem in China everything became clear to me.It seems that the W.T.O. was indeed coming to China that year to advise the Chinese on that problem. The World Toilet Organization !! LOL
Wow!!! Talent , charm and humor. I was very impressed. Talk about thinking outside the box!!! LoL
I gave her the highest mark of any of my classes. She was one of the ” late bloomers.” Quite a success story too I might add. She has gone on to do quite well in her life.
I often wonder why if this young woman could overcome all the obstacles put in her way by the system why the HELL couldn’t more of them do the same?
For those of you with an unrealistic overly romantic view of China I have some sage advice from a lao wai / foreign teacher with a great deal of experience.

Upon arriving in China all foreigners must go to the local police station and obtain a Residency Permit. These agencies are government operations so consequently they are staffed by Chinese Civil Servants. Among these civil servants will always be a few of Emperor Wo Bu Zhi Dao’s followers. Now as I’ve explained to you in previous chapters part of the good Emperor’s philosophy are tenets such as ” Lucidity Is The Enemy ” and ” Nothing And Nobody In All Of China May Move Faster Than The Napping Panda Of Sichuan “. For obvious reasons this can be a very trying experience. Should a foreigner , even one fluent in the language , try to obtain his Residency Permit by himself it almost certainly would be a recipe for disaster. The universities in an effort to preclude such problems will send a representative of the university with the foreigners. This does indeed minimize the conflicts , however if your university representative is inexperienced or if you get an inexperienced or uncooperative clerk , or God forbid you have the unfortunate luck to be assigned to one of Emperor Wo Bu Zhi Dao’s Disciples it can still be a very unpleasant and trying situation. If you are American picture dealing with The Department Of Motor Vehicles and multiply the frustration factor by 50.That was not the case for me this time. I got lucky , very lucky.
When my time came to visit the local Chinese Public Security Bureau or as it would be called everywhere else in the world the local Police Station I was accompanied by the Chinese representative of the university I teach at. As you’ve probably figured out from reading the preceding chapters the Public Security Bureaus are staffed and managed by the local branches of “The Committee Of Seventeen “which have been heavily infiltrated by the HaNazee.Knowing this fact I was preparing for and expecting the worst!! I was having nightmares,during the day, of interminable delays , obfuscation , discourtesy , frustration , and a quite amusing and entertaining display of organized chaos. What I actually got what was quite the opposite. As I’ve explained to you in preceding chapters of the story the evil first HaNazee Emperor Wo Bu Zhi Dao instructed ” The HaNazee Yellow Knights Of Ignorance And Chaos” to confuse all ” lao wai” by actually being courteous ,respectful and efficient about 20 % of the time. This strategy is brilliant since it is actually very effective against “lao wai / foreigners with less Chinese experience than me. Having been in China for a considerable amount of time now it is ineffective against me. I just prayed that Sheng Di had planted a” Sister Of The Jardeen Rose” or a “Sister or Brother Of The Jardeen Jasmine” right smack dab in the middle of a potentially dangerous situation for the foreigners as she is wont to do. Praise Li Tan!!Sheng Di willing I might actually get out of here quickly and with my sanity intact!!
I was brought to the head of the line and asked to sit down by a rather sexy young woman Public Security Bureau Officer.
She smiled and politely asked me some seemingly pointless questions. I answered politely. This was going well I thought to myself wondering if this courteous , prompt , professional service was going to continue. Shortly I found out that it was. She asked me to please sit up straight and face the camera. I made myself presentable and my photo was taken. It was then that I made my nearly disastrous mistake. I forgot where I was!! I forgot that in spite of the professional , courteous and prompt service I was still dealing with humorless dour Chinese Civil Servants and most likely an adherent or two of Emperor Wo Bu Zhi Dao’s Disciples was among them . In short I forgot that these folks have absolutely no sense of humor. The America sense of humor is known all over the world as being delightfully wacky and bizarre. Everywhere except China apparently. I figured that since the nice lady got to have a memento of me in the form of a photo it was only fair that I should get a memento of her in the form of a photo. To borrow from Tina Turner ” What’s fair got to do with it?” A look of fearful horror came upon her face!!
About 30 Public Security Bureau Agents snapped to attention caressing their security tools lovingly.You CANT take photos of Public Security Bureau Agents she admonished me sternly. Having been in China for a while by now I was aware of the richly deserved negative reputation of The Chinese Public Security Bureau Agents. The male agents are particularly nasty. Extreme violence against the unarmed and outnumbered is the one thing The HaNazee are highly efficient at. They are not quite so efficient when put up against the U.S. Marines. Unfortunately there were no U.S. Marines available to come to my rescue right at that moment. I did the only thing I could do .I apologized profusely and threw myself on her mercy. After explaining to her that it’s just the bizarre American sense of humor that we occasionally have difficulty controlling and that I meant no harm or disrespect she accepted my apology and advised me to be more careful next time. With a calm authoritative glance she dismissed her eager co-workers. I couldn’t help but notice that they seemed disappointed that they would not get to have fun with a “lao wai” today.
It was then that I smelled it!! The fragrance of rose and jasmine that was so delicate only a “Kindred Spirit” could discern it. A ” Sister Of The Jardeen Rose And Jasmine” was making herself known to me. I was right again!! Sheng Di had indeed planted a “Sister Of The Jardeen Rose And Jasmine” right here in the Public Security Bureau. She does indeed work in mysterious ways. Apparently I am blessed by Li Tan and thusly I walk with the Grace of Sheng Di. When I consider that I could possibly have been making involuntary organ donations as a result of letting my bizarre sense of humor get the best of me at the worst possible time I am eternally grateful that Sheng Di , Li Tan ,”The Dragons Of The Jardeen Gardens And Forests” , “The Sisters Of The Jardeen Rose” and “The Sisters And Brothers Of The Jardeen Jasmine” are all on my side.
Friends whenever you face difficulty or are facing trying times in China always seek “The Sisters Of The Jardeen Rose.” If you are a ” Kindred Spirit” They will come.
